Deruta and Italy have been famous for ceramics for more than 700 years. In the Dark Age both ceramics and designs were imported from the Magreb, but a turning point came when the Arabs began to buy their pottery from Italy. Turkish ceramics reached an artistic peak with Iznik ware, of remote Chinese inspiration, in the late 15 C. Some of the best Italian majolica was produced between 1440 and 1540, while the highest level of development was achieved by the masters of Deruta beginning in the early 16 C.
