The enchanting beach of Cala Luna knows how to surprise us every time with its crystal clear waters of a thousand shades. The Gulf of Orosei boasts a pearl of rare beauty, which today welcomes tourists from all over the world: the beach of Cala Luna, an enchanting oasis immersed in an unspoiled landscape. This wonder of nature is well known as it was chosen as the set for a cult movie of the 1970s Italian cinema. However, it was precisely this notoriety that put its landscape heritage at risk.
Symbol of the east coast of Sardinia, the beach of Cala Luna is located halfway between the villages of Baunei and Dorgali, overlooking the splendid crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Orosei. It is a small bay set in the greenery of one of the most important natural reserves in the region, where nature still dominates unchallenged. Its crescent of golden sand opens onto the sea characterized by shallow waters, an ideal place to allow children to play safely. Behind it is surrounded by steep rocky walls, in turn, dotted with lush Mediterranean vegetation.
One of the most striking features of Cala Luna is the presence of numerous caves, small cracks in the rock that flow into the clear waters, with a thousand shades of blue. Its very characteristic landscape has made the beach a bit difficult to reach: if it is accessible by sea with a simple boat ride, by land it is necessary to prepare for a nice excursion. To get there, you will have to take narrow, impervious paths that climb between the rocks, while enjoying a stunning view in the meantime.
Perhaps also for this reason the beach of Cala Luna is very popular among trekking lovers. The enchanting National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu presents an uncontaminated area, where steep peaks alternate with lush forests that, in every season of the year, offer a wide variety of intense colors. After facing a magnificent route, you can dive into the clear cool waters that lap the cove, an idyllic place if you want to admire the rich fauna of its seabed.
Cala Luna was for a long time an almost unknown paradise until it was discovered by the Italian director and screenwriter Lina Wertmuller: it was 1974, the year in which the famous film “Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto” (Swept Away) was released in theaters. Since that moment, thousands of tourists have begun to flock to the enchanting setting offered by the beach every year, thus risking to contaminate its natural beauty. This is why now as never before it is essential to practice conscious tourism, especially when we are faced with oases of rare whiteness such as the beach of Cala Luna.
Explore the unspoiled Cala Luna and enjoy your holiday in a luxury villa for rent in Sardinia.
